Arterial Ulcers

Wounds on the feet are varied and can have many different symptoms. There are several different types of wounds that a patient may develop on their feet. For example, arterial ulcers are one specific type of wound on the foot. Some people may be unfamiliar with this particular kind of wound. It is important to note that an arterial ulcer occurs when a break in the skin of the foot lets bacteria touch the tissue, and the ulcer will not heal properly due to blocked arteries in the leg. If an individual is living with an arterial ulcer, they may feel pain that can vary from case to case. To help arterial ulcers heal, a dressing may be used. The dressings essentially facilitate the healing of an ulcer by keeping it clean and protected. If you are someone that is currently suffering from an arterial ulcer, it is recommended that you contact a podiatrist today for treatment and advice.

Schrumpf, DPM from Active Feet Clinic. Our doctor will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment.

What Is Wound Care?

Wound care is the practice of taking proper care of a wound. This can range from the smallest to the largest of wounds. While everyone can benefit from proper wound care, it is much more important for diabetics. Diabetics often suffer from poor blood circulation which causes wounds to heal much slower than they would in a non-diabetic.

What Is the Importance of Wound Care?

While it may not seem apparent with small ulcers on the foot, for diabetics, any size ulcer can become infected. Diabetics often also suffer from neuropathy, or nerve loss. This means they might not even feel when they have an ulcer on their foot. If the wound becomes severely infected, amputation may be necessary. Therefore, it is of the upmost importance to properly care for any and all foot wounds.

How to Care for Wounds

The best way to care for foot wounds is to prevent them. For diabetics, this means daily inspections of the feet for any signs of abnormalities or ulcers. It is also recommended to see a podiatrist several times a year for a foot inspection. If you do have an ulcer, run the wound under water to clear dirt from the wound; then apply antibiotic ointment to the wound and cover with a bandage. Bandages should be changed daily and keeping pressure off the wound is smart. It is advised to see a podiatrist, who can keep an eye on it.

Causes and Risks of Diabetic Foot Ulcers

Diabetics are often at risk of other conditions that negatively affect their feet. These include peripheral neuropathy, which renders the feet numb, and peripheral artery disease, which slows the healing process. Both are the result of maintaining high blood sugar levels. Any sore or bruise on the feet that are not tended to immediately can easily become ulcerous. Termed foot ulcers, these open sores or wounds are usually found on the sole of the foot or the bottom of the big toe. Unless the diabetic’s feet are checked daily for such injuries, they can easily go undetected. An open foot ulcer increases the chance of developing an infection, which in turn can involve deeper layers of the skin, muscles, tendons, bones, and joints. In the most severe cases, surgery is required and loss of a limb is a possibility. If you are at risk of developing diabetic foot ulcers, it is suggested that you make an appointment with a podiatrist who is trained to deal with diabetes-related problems.

Diabetic foot care is important in preventing foot ailments such as ulcers. If you are suffering from diabetes or have any other concerns about your feet, contact Philip K. Schrumpf, DPM from Active Feet Clinic. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Diabetic Foot Care

Diabetes affects millions of people every year. The condition can damage blood vessels in many parts of the body, especially the feet. Because of this, taking care of your feet is essential if you have diabetes, and having a podiatrist help monitor your foot health is highly recommended.

The Importance of Caring for Your Feet

  • Routinely inspect your feet for bruises or sores.
  • Wear socks that fit your feet comfortably.
  • Wear comfortable shoes that provide adequate support.

Patients with diabetes should have their doctor monitor their blood levels, as blood sugar levels play such a huge role in diabetic care. Monitoring these levels on a regular basis is highly advised.

It is always best to inform your healthcare professional of any concerns you may have regarding your feet, especially for diabetic patients. Early treatment and routine foot examinations are keys to maintaining proper health, especially because severe complications can arise if proper treatment is not applied.

Various Shoes for Specific Occupations

Many jobs require employees to have adequate foot protection. Accidents may easily happen in the working environment, such as slipping on wet surfaces, being exposed to electrical hazards, or operating jack hammers. It is beneficial to choose shoes or boots that are slip resistant, and having a steel toe may be necessary for specific occupations. When purchasing shoes, it is helpful to try them on at the end of the day when the feet are at their largest. It is important that the feet are properly measured and shoes are tried on before completing the purchase. It is beneficial to replace existing shoes if they become cracked, damaged, or if water has seeped into the shoes. If you would like additional information about what type of shoes to buy for your workday, it is suggested that you confer with a podiatrist who can provide you with correct knowledge.

While working on the feet, it is important to take the proper care of them. For more information about working on your feet, contact Philip K. Schrumpf, DPM from Active Feet Clinic. Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.

Working on Your Feet

Standing on your feet for long periods of time can cause stress and pain in your feet. Your whole body may experience change in terms of posture, back pain, bunions, callouses and or plantar warts. There are ways to avoid these conditions with proper foot care, smart choices and correct posture.

Positive Changes

Negative heeled shoe – Choosing this shoe type places the heel slightly lower than the ball of the foot. These are great for overall foot health. Find shoes that fit you correctly.

Go barefoot – Our feet were not designed to be enclosed for all hours of the day. Try to periodically expose your feet to air.

Eliminate Pain

Foot Exercises – Performing simple exercises, incorporating yoga and doing stretches are beneficial. This will allow increased blood flow to the area and muscles of the foot.

Achilles tendon – Stretching the foot out flat on the floor will relax the calf muscles and tendon. These exercises can be performed almost anywhere. Make sure you add these exercises to your daily regimen.

With a little bit of this information and knowing more about foot health, you will notice changes. Foot stretches and proper footwear will help with pain and prevent further issues.

Children and Sever’s Disease

Sever’s disease is a swelling and irritation of the growth plate in the heels of children. The growth plate refers to a layer of cartilage near the end of a bone and this is where most bone growth occurs. It can be weaker and more prone to injury than the rest of the bone. Sever’s disease can come on during puberty when growth spurts are common. Bones, muscles, and tendons grow at different rates, and if the muscles and tendons become tight, which can easily happen from sports or prolonged standing, they can pull on the growth plate in the heel. This condition often causes pain and tenderness in one or both heels. The feet may be stiff when the child first wakes up and they may limp or walk on tiptoes to deal with the pain. This is a condition that can usually be managed without chronic issues. If your child complains of heel pain or you notice that their gait is off, it is suggested that you take them to see a podiatrist who can properly diagnose the problem and provide treatment options.

Many people suffer from bouts of heel pain. For more information, contact Philip K. Schrumpf, DPM of Active Feet Clinic. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Causes of Heel Pain

Heel pain is often associated with plantar fasciitis. The plantar fascia is a band of tissues that extends along the bottom of the foot. A rip or tear in this ligament can cause inflammation of the tissue.

Achilles tendonitis is another cause of heel pain. Inflammation of the Achilles tendon will cause pain from fractures and muscle tearing. Lack of flexibility is also another symptom.

Heel spurs are another cause of pain. When the tissues of the plantar fascia undergo a great deal of stress, it can lead to ligament separation from the heel bone, causing heel spurs.

Why Might Heel Pain Occur?

  • Wearing ill-fitting shoes
  • Wearing non-supportive shoes
  • Weight change
  • Excessive running

Treatments

Heel pain should be treated as soon as possible for immediate results. Keeping your feet in a stress-free environment will help. If you suffer from Achilles tendonitis or plantar fasciitis, applying ice will reduce the swelling. Stretching before an exercise like running will help the muscles. Using all these tips will help make heel pain a condition of the past.
